ARC researchers will take part in a curatorial residency and exhibition in Turin, Italy in November; collaborating with Curators and Artists from Portugal, Greece, Italy and Spain.

The project, entitled PIIGS An Alternative Geography of Curating, is a platform to develop a debate about the economic crisis and how it has affected artistic and curatorial practices from the point of view of PIIGS* nations.

Taking place at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo as a fringe event during Artissima International Art Fair, the project will take the form of screenings, lectures, workshops and an exhibition. A parallel blog Talking Piigs acts as a virtual platform for discussion between the curatorial groups.

Irish artist and IADT MAVIS graduate Fiona Marron has been selected by the group to exhibit recent video and sculptural work which relates to interconnected social systems and an interest in mercantile and economic influences. Fiona will present a screening of her work and participate in a discussion as part of the exhibition supported by Culture Ireland.

Participating curators and institutions include ARC researchers Sophie Behal, Maeve Lynch, Steven Nestor, Rosie O’Reilly and Ben Stafford along with Campo 15, Italy; Neon Foundation, Greece; ARTIS, University of Lisbon, Portugal; and University Complutense of Madrid, Spain.

* PIIGS refers to the countries Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain, characterised as careless and negligent by the international economic community

You know about a worm when it’s cut, growin’ whole again? is a One Sentence Exhibition curated by Maeve Connolly and Dennis McNulty for Kadist Art Foundation.

Kadist Art Foundation has invited curators to write or choose a single sentence, making each word in the sentence a hyperlink to an image, video, text, or website. As a result, the title of the exhibition becomes a compact architecture, accompanying the reader as they explore far-reaching corners of the internet. Previous curators in the One Sentence Exhibition series include Chus Martinez, Adam Carr, Matteo Lucchetti, Jordan Stein, Chen Tamir & Talia Heiman, Lattitudes, Jacob Fabricius, Nato Thompson and Rudolf Frieling.

About Kadist

Great Expectations: Prospects for the Future of Curatorial Education, edited by Leigh Markopoulos, has just been published by Koenig Books, California College of the Arts and The Banff Centre. It features a panel discussion with contributions from ARC lecturers Maeve Connolly and Sinead Hogan. The book also features interviews with graduates from many different masters programmes, including MAVIS alumni Chiara Liberti and Sean O’Sullivan.

Further information on Great Expectations : Almost 30 years after the founding of the first curatorial studies program (at the École du Magasin, Grenoble), with the curator remaining a figure of curiosity and fascination in the contemporary art world, a new question has emerged: how do we educate curators? Great Expectations: Prospects for the Future of Curatorial Education explores this question, focusing in particular on the challenges, opportunities and subjects that motivate educators and students. How has curatorial education changed in the past 25 years, and what will the next 25 years bring?

The product of a spring 2015 conference at the California College of the Arts, this volume, edited by Leigh Markopoulos, brings together contributions from Mark Beasley, Maeve Connolly, María del Carmen Carrión, Kit Hammonds, Matthew Higgs, Anthony Huberman, Prem Krishnamurthy, Mami Kataoka, Kristina Lee Podesva, Salwa Mikdadi, Julian Myers-Szupinska and Ulay, among others.
